CAY HILL, Sint Maarten— The Integrity Chamber commends the Council of Ministers of Sint Maarten on the forthcoming implementation of a Ministerial Gift Policy. The announcement symbolises a significant and active step towards enhancing transparency and accountability within the public sector, and further strengthens our democracy.
The Integrity Chamber had previously advised on the establishment of such guidelines in 2020, calling attention to the importance of clear definitions, monetary limits, and the creation of a Ministerial Gift Register. The policy introduces clear guidelines for ministers regarding giving and accepting gifts.
The Chamber applauds the current government on the forthcoming implementation of this policy, as it reflects the government’s commitment to implementing recommendations that foster public trust and encourage good governance. A well-defined policy also safeguards against potential conflicts of interest, reinforces ethical conduct and promotes consistency.
The Integrity Chamber looks forward to the policy’s formal implementation and encourages continued efforts to promote integrity and responsible governance in Sint Maarten.
